“Generations of Friendly Service”

Raritan State Bank, founded in 1920, continues to recognize the people who have made RSB a great place to be. Many businesses are fortunate to have employees who are like family. At Raritan State Bank, we are proud to have multiple generations of one family who have played an important role in creating the culture of friendly service our customers have come to know and love.

Raymond Gearhart was an original stockholder with Raritan State Bank becoming not only a director, but the first Chairman of the Board. Chairman Gearhart passed the torch to his son, Wayne Gearhart, who was elected to the board upon Raymond’s retirement, where he served until 1993.  Wayne’s daughter-in-law, Linda Gearhart, also worked at Raritan State Bank for 25 years beginning in 1987.

Raymond Gearhart’s daughter, Pauline Gearhart Overstreet, began working for the bank in 1943. Before her passing, Pauline shared an account with us of her time at RSB. The bank at that time had 6 employees: 3 bookkeepers, 2 tellers and the “chief” or president, Waldo Erickson.  Her bank salary was $75 a month. The bank had 2 posting machines, a ledger sheet and a statement sheet. Cancelled checks were filed in the vault under customer name. Pauline recalls that machines back then were very loud and warm and it was especially exciting when the directors bought an air conditioner for the area to keep the area cool. When asked about her time with the bank, Pauline says, “This was a great place to work. I enjoyed every minute I was there.” We are honored to be able to share Pauline’s memories with you today and are thankful to the Gearhart-Overstreet family for allowing us to do so.

In 1969, Pauline’s daughter Andrea Barber began a tenure at Raritan State Bank that lasted 43 years! Although she never worked with her mother, her grandfather was still on the board at that time. Andrea was present to see banking practices and procedures move from paper to electronics as well as witness all of the regulations and reporting required to do business move to a technological age. Andrea was still part of the bank when the Abingdon Banking Center and Bushnell Banking Center were added to the Raritan State Bank community. Andrea says she has wondered what her grandfather would think of the expansion and feels certain he would be very proud. Andrea remembers, “Living and working in this little community was the best. We all knew one another and their families and many of us had gone to school together. There have been several parades in town over the years and the bank has participated in many of them. From walking the parade route and tossing candy to the kids to building a float and riding on it was a lot of fun.”

In 1990, RSB gained a fourth generation of the Gearhart family. Andrea’s daughter Janine Coulter was hired to work in the loan department and in later years became a Customer Service Representative. Janine was able to work with both her mother and her Aunt Linda during her time at RSB. She was the youngest employee at the bank when she was hired, turning 21 while away at training. She fondly remembers working with Art Kane. Janine says, “Working with Art Kane was extra special! I remember when I was a kid, I would go into the bank on Saturday mornings to see what mom was doing. He would always make sure to talk to me and find something to give me! When my kids were little and they would come into the bank, he was the same way with them! Kids were extra special to him, which is why ‘Uncle Art’ was a fitting name for him! He had a heart of gold!” Janine also remembers working with a few of the faces you see today when you walk through the door.

Raritan State Bank is proud of its history, and we are happy to share our history with the Gearhart family. Four generations in one banking facility helping to create an atmosphere of friendly service.  It is part of what makes us: Large enough to serve you. Strong enough to protect you. Small enough to know you.

Raritan State Bank, founded in 1920, shares in celebrating 100 years. We recognize the people who have made RSB a great place to be, and it is a delight to be able to share this 100 year milestone with one of our former RSB family members.

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY DOROTHY WALKER!

Dorothy was a long time resident of the Media, Illinois area.  She and her husband Stanley worked and raised 2 children in the community. Dorothy was a secretary at Raritan State Bank; Stanley was a Biology, Industrial Arts and Agriculture teacher before finishing his career in school administration. After retiring, they moved south where she currently resides in Spanish Fort, Alabama.

We reached out to Dorothy through her daughter, Jan Schmitz. She had this to say about her time at Raritan State Bank:

“My Media neighbor, Waldo Erickson approached me in 1963, asking me if I would come to work on a temporary basis to provide clerical coverage for staff vacations.  That position quickly transitioned to full-time.  I was honored to serve as Secretary to Presidents Waldo Erickson and Eldon Duncan until my retirement in December, 1979.

I have so many happy memories of our wonderful staff.  I have special memories of my friend, Art Kane.  He was a treasured part of our team.  Banking was not highly automated during my years at the bank.  We provided our community with very personal service and were proud to support the community activities and schools.  I am grateful I could be part of such a wonderful organization.  I send my best wishes as the bank celebrates 100 years!”

Thank you Dorothy, for being such a big part of our community, and thank you for helping us create an atmosphere of friendly service.
